Calgary Urban Project Society “CUPS” is developing a mentoring project for homeless families. This project includes partnering with a specific family and assisting them to get established in a community. This includes helping with living necessities and developing a financial plan for one year. Two members of the Christ Church Outreach Committee are exploring our participation in this important project.
Inn from the Cold Inn from the Cold provides supper, overnight shelter, and breakfast to homeless families in the Calgary area. Due to renovations, Christ Church has been unable to host Inn from the Cold this year. However, we have accepted a request to assist our neighbouring parish of Sacred Heart with their “Inn” on the first and third Mondays of each month. Anyone interested in volunteering is asked to contact Sacred Heart at 403.244.2741.
New Initiative: HIV/AIDS Grandmothers to Grandmothers This wonderful program was started through the Stephen Lewis Foundation (www.stephenlewisfoundation.org). Grandmothers in Africa have been left to pick up the pieces of families shattered by the HIV/AIDS epidemic that has swept through most of Africa. The idea behind this organisation is for grandmothers in Canada to assist with fund raising in order to help out African grannies. Christ Church has sponsored three gatherings already, and looks forward to more.
And Watch for: Christ Church is blessed to have a special relationship with brother and sister Anglicans on the nearby Tsuu T’ina reserve. This has heightened sensitivity to issues arising from residential schools. A new DVD, called “Topahdewin: The Gladys Cook Story,” has been purchased for the parish Library. In addition to being the dramatic story of a residential school survivor, this video has proved to be a catalyst in helping people who were abused speak out.
